Animal Pound
Serving Sarnia, Point Edward, Plympton Township, Chippewas of Sarnia, and Town of Forest. We accept stray animals brought in by the municipality employed Animal Control Officers. These animals become available for adoption four days after arrival. For animal pound services in other than above areas contact respective municipal office.
Shelter
For pets brought in by their owners from any location. Only animals judged to be suitable for adoption are accepted. We do not provide euthanization on request by the public. The owner is charged a fee for bringing in his/her pet. These animals become available for adoption immediately.
Wildlife
Wild animals and birds in distress are accepted at the Shelter. Those that are likely to recover, are transferred to other organizations for rehabilitation and then released to their natural environment.
Adoptions
Shelter staff screen adoptions, help people choose the right animal, and promote identification on pets. Dogs and cats adopted from the Shelter must be spayed or neutered unless the procedure has already been performed. The adoption fee includes the cost of the surgery, but it is subsidized by the Frances Panton Spay/Neuter Fund.
Quarantine
Animals that are suspected rabies carriers are placed in isolation at the Shelter for a minimum of 10 days of quarantine and only released on the approval of the Lambton Health Unit.
Euthanization
Performed humanely by a veterinarian on those animals residing at the Shelter that appear to be unadoptable and when the shelter runs out of accommodation. Injured wildlife appearing to be beyond recovery is euthanized.
Return of Lost/Found Animals
The Shelter receives numerous calls about lost pets and the staff assists as much as they can with locating these. Animals are returned to their owners on payment of a poundage fee.
Animal Rescue
The Humane Society will only provide this service when it can be done without jeopardizing the safety of the animal and the personnel and when it is within the capability of our equipment and staff.
Disposal of Dead Animals
Dead animals (e.g. road kills), are brought to the Shelter primarily by the municipal animal control officers. Pet owners can also dispose of their dead animals at the Shelter for a fee. All dead animals collected at the Shelter are disposed of by cremation.
Cruelty Investigation
Some of our staff are trained for and appointed as agents authorized under the Ontario SPCA Act, R.S.O. 1980 to investigate cases of cruelty to, or neglect of, animals. Investigation results in a written report and the animal owner or keeper is advised of the required action. If instructions are not complied with, seizure of the animal(s) and/or laying of charges may result. In serious cases the investigation is sometimes carried out in cooperation with the police.
Education
The Humane Society uses the news media extensively, for a continuous program aimed at educating the public to be more responsible and caring in their dealings with animals. We also welcome school classes and other groups to our Shelter to learn about care of animals.
Sale of Dog Licences
For the convenience of the public, City of Sarnia dog licenses are sold at the Shelter at no gain to the Humane Society.
